“3D Vision – This allows for stereoscopic 3D in PC games, provided that one owns a 3D Vision Kit (a pair of 3D glasses) and the right monitor. A niche market, but something gamers will consider when plunking down hundreds of dollars for their next generation graphics cards.”
Asraf Eassa – AMD Connot Survive the Graphics War Like This
This is a very interesting article about the current quandry that AMD appears to be in. I am not qualified to assess the correctness of the overall article, or its conclusions, but I would like to point out something that, in my opinion, the author missed.
As stated in the above quote, Ashraf vastly underestimates the implications of Nvidia’s dominance in this area, and therefore AMD’s challenges. Though their related 3D photo sharing website Phereo.com, Nvidia is providing a platform and a mechanism for consumers to share their 3D content. With their WordPress plugin, and recently announced Phereo Photo Player they are positioning themselves as a defacto stand in market segment that is just beginning to grow.
As more devices are created that have the ability to take Stereo 3D pictures, the ecosystem of apps, displays and websites will expand to service this content. Plugins that seem niche now may become standard in future browser versions.
